The solution works by irritating the lining of the vein so that the vein seals shut. This procedure has been used for the treatment of veins since the 1930s but has been refined in recent years.

How Does Sclerotherapy Work?

Sclerotherapy is a minimally invasive procedure used to treat spider veins, small varicose veins, and other types of superficial veins. A saline solution is injected into the vein, causing it to collapse and disappear. In most cases, multiple injections are necessary to achieve desired results. Sclerotherapy usually takes 5-30 minutes depending on the number of veins to be treated.

What Is The Recovery From Sclerotherapy?

Patients may resume normal activity after treatment and should wear compression stockings for a few days. On the next day, most people return to their usual routine, although it is prudent to have someone drive you home after your session. For two weeks following treatment, you may be asked to avoid vigorous exercise. You'll also want to avoid sun exposure to the treated regions during that time.

How Many Sclerotherapy Sessions Will I Need?

Most people need a few treatments to obtain the best results, generally performed at 8-week intervals. The number of treatments needed will vary depending on the size and severity of the veins targeted. While sclerotherapy can be highly effective at eliminating spider veins, it may not be able to make them disappear completely. In some cases, additional treatments may be necessary to achieve desired results.

Will The Spider Veins Treated Go Away?

The majority of veins that are treated with sclerotherapy will go away, but the treatment will not prevent the development of new veins. It is important to have underlying varicose veins treated prior to spider vein treatment to eliminate the source of some spider veins.
