Although they are not painful, stretch marks can cause feelings of self-consciousness. Laser therapy is a relatively new treatment option that is providing excellent results to those looking to reduce the appearance of their stretch marks.

How Does Laser Therapy Treat Stretch Marks?

Laser therapy works by delivering pulses of light to the affected area. This light energy helps to stimulate collagen production, which can help to improve the appearance of stretch marks. The recovery from laser stretch mark treatment is typically quite short. Most people only experience mild discomfort during the procedure, and, for most, there is no downtime required.

We use both the yellow light Cynergy Pulsed dye laser and the Fraxel Re:store resurfacing laser to treat stretch marks. Both advanced laser systems work to induce remodeling of the collagen under the skin to allow for fading in color and blending of the texture of the stretch mark.

Common Causes Of Stretch Marks

Stretch marks occur when the skin is stretched quickly over a short period of time, most often during pregnancy or rapid weight gain. The layers of stretched skin are torn and replaced by scar tissue. When the weight is lost, the stretch marks usually remain. They generally appear as light pink or purplish threads, and normally show up on the abdomen, thighs, upper arms, breasts, and hips. While they aren’t a health hazard, they do pose a cosmetic problem for many people.

Treatment Modalities

There are several treatments for stretch mark revision, but the most effective treatments are laser-based.

  • Fraxel Re:store uses a fractional 1550 nm wavelength to precisely target damaged skin cells deep within the dermis. This non-ablative laser technology leaves healthy tissue intact while stimulating your body's natural collagen production process. As collagen production increases, stretch marks will become less visible over time.
  • Fraxel CO2 Re:pair also uses a fractional 10600 nm wavelength but is a more aggressive treatment than Re:store. This ablative laser targets the top layer of skin, vaporizing damaged cells and stimulating collagen production. The results are immediate, but there is more downtime associated with this procedure.
  • Vascular Specific Laser Treatment: Fraxel Re:store, Fraxel CO2 Re:pair, and Vascular Specific Laser Treatment can give you a significant improvement in the appearance of your stretch marks, but it is important to consult with one of our board-certified doctors to find out which procedure is right for you.
