What Causes Age Spots?

Brown spots on the skin, or hyperpigmentation such as age spots, and sunspots are very common issues that appear over time. These areas can be the result of sun damage, melasma, or your heritage. Fortunately, laser technology has made it possible to successfully remove brown spots and achieve a fresh, even skin tone.

What Are The Best Treatments For Age And Sunspots?

Light- and laser-based therapies can help to improve skin texture and reduce the appearance of sunspots and age spots. These lasers can also improve the look of fine lines and wrinkles. How Do These Lasers Work For Sunspots And Age Spots?

These lasers have been in use since the late 1980s for the treatment of pigmented skin blemishes and birthmarks and use visible light (green and red) that is selectively absorbed by the pigment within the unwanted blemishes. The laser light is then transferred to heat and the pigmented target is eliminated without harm to the normal surrounding skin. Treatments feel like a rubber band snap and leave a temporary discoloration of the skin that lasts a few days. If more than one treatment is needed, it can be repeated after 4-6 weeks.

What Treatments Work For Sunspots And Age Spots?

There are a few different laser treatments that can be used to improve the appearance of pigmented lesions.

Pigmented Lesion Laser Treatment may consist of:

  • Fraxel DUAL uses two different wavelength lasers to target both the surface and deep layers of the skin. The outer layer of the skin is treated with an ablative laser, which removes the top layer of damaged skin. This helps to improve fine lines, wrinkles, and other surface imperfections. The inner layer of the skin is treated with a non-ablative laser, which penetrates deeply into the skin to promote collagen production. This helps to improve the overall tone and texture of the skin.
  • PhotoFacial Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) uses high-intensity pulsed light to target pigmented lesions. The light energy is absorbed by the pigment, causing the lesions to break up and fade over time. IPL treatment can also help to improve the overall appearance of the skin by reducing redness and improving texture.

How Does Laser Therapy Work To Address Age And Sunspots?

Laser therapy works by targeting the pigmented cells in the skin and breaking up the pigment. This results in a lighter appearance of the brown spot and a more even skin tone. Laser therapy is safe and effective for all skin types and can be used to treat large areas of pigmentation or small, isolated spots.

What Is The Difference Between IPL And Fraxel For Age Spots?

IPL uses a broad-spectrum light that targets both melanin and hemoglobin, while Fraxel uses a laser to target specific areas. Fraxel treatment can take anywhere from 15 minutes to an hour, while an IPL treatment can last up to 30 minutes.

How Many Treatments Will I Need?

IPL treatments are typically done in a series of three to six sessions, spaced four to six weeks apart. Fraxel treatments are usually done in a series of five to six sessions, spaced two to four weeks apart. Both IPL and Fraxel treatments can cause mild side effects, such as redness, swelling, and bruising. However, these side effects are typically temporary and resolve within a few days.
