What Are Varicose Veins?

Varicose veins are a common condition that occurs when the valves in the veins weaken, causing them to become enlarged and twisted. While they can occur anywhere on the body, they are most often seen on the legs. Varicose veins can cause pain and discomfort and may also lead to more serious problems such as blood clots.

What Are The Treatments For Varicose Veins?

  • Endovenous Laser Therapy is a minimally invasive treatment for varicose veins that uses laser energy to close the affected vein. A small incision is made in the skin, and a thin fiber is inserted into the vein. The laser energy is then delivered through the fiber, causing the vein to collapse. EVLT is a safe and effective alternative to surgery, and most patients can return to their normal activities within a few days.
  • Ambulatory Phlebectomy/Microphlebectomy is another minimally invasive treatment for varicose veins. This procedure involves making small incisions in the skin and removing the affected vein through these incisions. Ambulatory phlebectomy is usually performed under local anesthesia, and most patients can return to their normal activities within a few days.
  • Duplex Ultrasound Examination is a diagnostic test used to evaluate blood flow in veins. It uses sound waves to create images of the veins, which can be used to assess whether there is venous insufficiency. Duplex ultrasound is a non-invasive procedure that does not require any preparation beforehand.
  • Ultrasound Guided Sclerotherapy is a minimally invasive treatment for varicose veins that involves injecting a sclerosing agent into the affected vein. Ultrasound imaging is used to guide the needle into the vein, and the sclerosing agent causes the vein to collapse. Ultrasound-guided sclerotherapy is a safe and effective alternative to surgery, and most patients can return to their normal activities within a few days.

What Causes Varicose Veins?

Poorly functioning vein valves lead to pressure buildup inside veins under the skin surface. Over time, bulging veins develop and lead to symptoms of pain, swelling, heaviness, fatigue, itching, and restless legs. Both men and women are affected by varicose veins, but it is more common in women (55%). The following can contribute to the development of leg vein problems:

  • Pregnancies
  • Prolonged standing
  • Hormonal factors
  • Wearing high-heeled shoes
